Prof. Dr. Ali Övgün is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at Eastern Mediterranean University. His research lies at the intersection of quantum gravity, cosmology, particle physics, and astrophysics. He is particularly interested in quantum gravity and its implications for black hole physics and cosmology beyond their standard models. More recently, he has expanded his research programme to include quantum optics in curved spacetime, exploring the interplay between quantum phenomena, gravitation, and strong-field astrophysical environments.
In 2026, at the age of 38, Prof. Övgün was appointed full professor, becoming the youngest professor of physics in North Cyprus. This milestone reflects his rapid academic advancement and his substantial contributions to theoretical physics, gravitation, and astrophysics.
Prof. Övgün was named a Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS in 2023, 2024, and 2025, placing him among the top 0.05% of approximately 30 million scholars worldwide. This distinction recognises his exceptional research productivity, scholarly impact, and the quality of his scientific contributions. He has also been included in the Stanford University–Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists list for six consecutive years, from 2020 to 2025.
In the single-year scientific-impact ranking, Prof. Övgün was placed 83rd worldwide in the field of Nuclear and Particle Physics, making him the highest-ranked scientist in this field in both Türkiye and Northern Cyprus. He was also included in the career-long impact ranking, in which he again ranked first in his field in Türkiye and Northern Cyprus and 1,305th worldwide. These results place him among the world’s 100 most influential scientists in his field in terms of single-year scientific impact.
In 2026, Prof. Övgün received the Türkiye Alumni Scientific and Academic Achievements Award, presented by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye, in recognition of his distinguished scientific achievements, international scholarly impact, and contributions to academic research.
Prof. Dr. Ali Övgün, has been awarded the 2026 Prof. Dr. Engin Arık Scientist Award by the Turkish Physical Society in recognition of his scientific and academic research, original contributions to physical science, international scientific collaborations, and activities aimed at training young researchers.
